Chapter 428
Chapter 428 Deep in Enemy Territory
This scene made Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan seem a bit overdramatic.
But it was understandable for the two to be so cautious; after all, they were in the Demon’s stronghold, and their current approach felt like crawling under a pile of straw and calling it a lucky charm. No matter how others reassured them that it was effective, they had no confidence in it.
Fortunately, the two didn’t snap and go for a fight right away.
However…
Was this guy actually expecting them to ride on his back…?
Ling Mo sized up the enormous monster for a moment.
Its whole body resembled a chameleon, but its neck was covered in huge abscesses, as if they were about to burst at any moment, splattering water everywhere.
The thought of having to climb onto this guy’s back was indeed quite daunting.
Noticing they hadn’t reacted for a while, the monster slowly turned towards them and asked, “Why… don’t you come up?”
Its voice was much heavier than before, sounding excruciating to hear.
Before Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan figured out how to respond, the monster continued, “Is it… that you find me unappealing…?”
While speaking, Xia Xinyan and Ling Mo noticed the abscesses on the monster’s body were pulsating more rapidly, as if they were reaching the brink of explosion.
Clearly, this was a death trap of a question.
Ling Mo had no doubt that if they said they found it disgusting, the monster would self-destruct, leading to a mutual demise.
And being so close to the monster, he didn’t have full confidence in protecting himself while also saving the others.
Monica could be left out of the equation, but that meat can certainly wouldn’t survive such a wave of corrosive fallout.
So ultimately, he shook his head, “Of course not, we just aren’t used to riding on others’ backs. You can take us there instead.”
But the monster wasn’t interested in giving them that choice: “It’s… far away. You should come up… quickly.”
“We can walk fast enough to keep up with you, don’t worry.”
“Come up…”
It seemed this monster was fixated on the idea that they had to ride on it.
There are drawbacks to having a low IQ, indeed…
Ling Mo sighed, nodded at Xia Xinyan and Monica, then looked back at the monster, “Fine, we’ll come up.”
Monica found it rather amusing, “Such enthusiasm…”
As they spoke, the monster turned around to let them climb on its back, at which point Ling Mo whispered, “I’ll go up first to make some preparations.”
Saying that, he jumped onto the monster, and just before reaching its back, he summoned a layer of particle shield under his feet and stood steadily on top, gesturing for the other two to follow.
Xia Xinyan and Monica quickly joined him, and the meat can followed suit.
Sensing they were now all ready, the monster… took off.
In that instant, Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan truly understood what the monster meant by “fast”—this was a freaking supercar! If it weren’t for the monster’s tail standing upright acting as a platform for everyone, they would’ve been thrown off right away. Even so, the force of acceleration momentarily left them stunned.
Ling Mo quickly conjured a larger particle shield to secure them in place, finally breathing a sigh of relief as he looked at the rapidly retreating landscape, feeling somewhat grim, “This guy is actually this fast?”
This was beyond his expectations; such a large frame shouldn’t match such speed. Or was it… this monster’s ability was actually based on speed?
Yet, at such a high velocity, the chaos was compounded by the monster’s absurdly aerodynamically-challenged abscesses on its neck, thrashing wildly against the air resistance—whether it burst or not had become irrelevant; it was simply driving everyone on its back into a frenzy.
Ling Mo could only silently increase the particle shields in front of everyone, amping up their safety.
After all, even if those abscesses hadn’t burst yet, the monster was already dripping with corrosive liquid. If Ling Mo hadn’t set up that particle shield as a saddle, they would’ve shed a layer of skin just climbing on.
But that wasn’t the main point.
The main point was…
“It brought us to the Demon Stronghold.” Xia Xinyan was attentively surveying their surroundings; despite the monster’s speed, it wasn’t hard for her to catch the critical details, and now… the number of demons around them was steadily increasing.
And they were showing no signs of stopping.
Moreover, these demons were quite powerful; even she and Ling Mo might struggle against so many of them—of course, if it came to a fight, it would likely be Ling Mo doing the heavy lifting, while she would just be a spectator under his explosive mode.
But… she certainly wasn’t sure that explosive mode could handle these demons anymore.
After all, Cang Hai City had seen immunity to explosions, and she had previously encountered sources of invasion that could affect explosive effects. It was possible this entire Shen City had similar threats.
At the very least, the demons they were currently seeing exceeded her expectations in terms of strength.
She could even see the shadows of the demon armies her expedition faced in her previous life on these demons—the only difference being that there weren’t quite as many this time.
This thought darkened her mood.
Ling Mo wasn’t feeling any better.
So many demons meant that if their identities were exposed, they would be facing hellish difficulties. Even he couldn’t guarantee everyone’s safe escape. At that point, they’d likely have to rely on Monica.
But the last thing he wanted was for Monica to help—why? Probably because Monica had her eyes on Xinyan.
Though she was a woman, she was still a rival.
As everyone pondered their own complicated thoughts, the monster fish finally brought them to their destination.
This was the largest city square in Shen City, marking one of the city’s iconic representations, and at this moment, it was packed with demons.
There wasn’t even a spot to stand.
Even Xia Xinyan was getting goosebumps just looking at it—she suddenly understood how reckless their actions had truly been.
This wasn’t like the last life’s expedition; at least there was a chance for rescue…
When the demons noticed the monster fish approaching, they tacitly parted to make way for it in a corner of the square.
The monster fish landed in that spot, its deep voice rumbling, “Mommy… is guiding the way… you all… can meet her in a moment…”
“That must be Mommy,” Ling Mo thought, even without it saying anything he had identified the focal presence in the square—like the human figure perched atop a throne made entirely of flesh and blood, with eight massive bone spines rising behind it, providing quite the spectacle.
Most importantly, that being was the strongest there—because even Ling Mo, who wasn’t particularly sensitive to presences, could feel the intense aura of danger emanating from her.
