Chapter 427
Chapter 427 Mom
“I have a bad feeling,” Ling Mo frowned slightly.
When something unusual happens, it’s often a sign of trouble, and what was happening now was beyond unusual—it was going against the norm.
“Can we figure out what killed these undead?” He squatted next to a relatively fresh corpse, reaching out to wipe the blood off its body.
“These corpses have a faint trace of demon aura,” Xia Xinyan was still scanning the area, puzzled. “But I don’t sense any demon presence here.”
It seemed they had all already left.
Ling Mo also discovered some clues: “Looks like they were killed by some sort of blunt weapon… struck dead in one hit. The guy who did it must be really strong.”
Though many bodies were mangled, the signs of heavy blows were evident… which meant the attacker relied on a blunt weapon… something like a fist or a hammer that smashed these undead to bits.
There were also some faint traces on the street.
After a moment’s thought, Ling Mo turned to the meat can: “Can you do something like this?”
“Not a chance,” the meat can shook its head firmly. “My strength isn’t enough to tear a body apart with a single punch, not even for some low-level creatures.”
“That doesn’t add up,” Ling Mo rubbed his chin. “If someone could punch apart these undead, there shouldn’t only be shallow marks left on the ground…”
Unless… that being had almost freakishly precise control over its own strength, able to dial it back at the moment of impact, which would explain the light marks.
But if such an existence actually existed… even Ling Mo would find that a bit terrifying.
Xia Xinyan withdrew her gaze from the corpses and said, “There’s nothing useful to be found here, let’s continue digging deeper.”
Ling Mo paused for a moment, then nodded: “Alright, let’s keep going.”
No matter what dangers lurked ahead, they had to go in; there was no point in obsessing over it here.
Even if they did encounter some horrifying presence—there was Monica, after all!
Besides, when worse comes to worst, they could just bail. Although Ling Mo wouldn’t say he could defeat every opponent in the world, he was certain that if he wanted to run, no one could stop him.
Unless it was some kind of spatial ability, like a cheat in a game.
Though he really had no right to judge others like that.
As they ventured deeper into the old district, they finally came across a demon.
The first demon they saw was a gigantic… creature covered in tumors, with corrosive fluid dribbling down, causing smoke to rise from the ground it walked on, giving off a bizarre vibe.
Ling Mo immediately stepped in front of Xia Xinyan, ready for battle.
He realized that such corrosive demons seemed pretty common; he had encountered several before—they were definitely the most troublesome to handle, as a small mistake could get you sprayed in the face.
And he couldn’t guarantee whether this demon was stronger or weaker than the ones he had seen before—but given what they had experienced so far, he felt it was probably stronger.
Xia Xinyan grew alert as well since this was the first demon they had encountered after entering the city that hadn’t fled. Whatever happened next wouldn’t be surprising.
The worst development would be an outright battle.
Now they just had to hope their disguise would hold.
The demon eventually stopped about ten meters away from them, trembling slightly like it was having a seizure as it surveyed them.
Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan stayed silent, and the atmosphere became tense.
Finally, the monster broke the silence: “You… are not… from here…”
The monster’s voice was extremely hoarse, like it hadn’t had water in days—it was rather uncomfortable to listen to but did ease some of Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan’s worries.
It was within their expectations that this creature could communicate, since it was the first demon they encountered that didn’t flee after spotting them. Normally, that would mean it was stronger. If this creature couldn’t talk, it would be harder to handle due to uncontrollable variables; being able to communicate at least told them the monster’s intentions.
…Though the demon’s thoughts might not align with human reasoning.
Ling Mo seemed ready to speak but then thought of something, suddenly turning to the meat can.
The meat can didn’t understand his expression.
Ling Mo: “…Ahem, we are indeed not from here. Meat can, you take it from here.”
The meat can understood his meaning: “We come from a human stronghold.”
Ling Mo: “…”
Xia Xinyan: “…”
—Is this guy way too honest or something?!
Just when they thought they would expose themselves with that line, the monster merely scratched its head: “Never heard of… that place.”
Ling Mo: “…”
Xia Xinyan: “…”
“Where are you from… I don’t need to know… but…” The monster hesitated for a moment, seemingly trying to organize its words, “If you come to this place… you must listen to Mommy… otherwise… Mommy will get angry… and kill you…”
At these words, Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan exchanged glances.
Then Ling Mo looked back at the monster: “This is Mommy’s territory?”
“No… this… is everyone’s territory… Everyone… listens to Mommy…” The monster slowly explained.
Xia Xinyan furrowed her brows slightly.
So a community has already formed… Looks like their evolution speed is much faster than in Cang Hai City.
The “Mommy” the monster mentioned must be the leader of the demons in Shen City. It’s possible those undead were disposed of because they were disobedient… or perhaps she was just clearing her territory?
But judging by the monster’s demeanor, it seemed they didn’t reject outside demons? Was that Mommy so confident that outsiders wouldn’t threaten her reign?
With that thought, Xia Xinyan suddenly spoke up, “Can you take us to meet Mommy?”
Since they had gathered some intel, it made sense to take a look.
The monster looked a bit confused: “Why do you want to meet Mommy?”
“You told us to listen to Mommy, but we don’t even know who Mommy is—what if we accidentally upset her?” Xia Xinyan raised an eyebrow.
Tricking a creature with low intelligence didn’t require complex lies.
The monster believed her: “Okay… I’ll take you to meet Mommy…”
As soon as the words left its mouth, its body suddenly exploded—
Ling Mo instantly raised a particle shield in front of everyone, while all long-range attack methods locked onto the target. Xia Xinyan also activated her abilities, ready to counter.
But the attack they anticipated didn’t come. Once the green mist cleared, what appeared before them was a three to four-meter tall… mutated quadruped fish.
“Get on… I… will take you to meet Mommy…”
