Chapter 405
Chapter 405 It Stood Up
The scene suddenly turned chaotic.
The overwhelming impact of the undead surge was indeed something no movie could ever compare to, and in such a situation, the suspense of survival was enough to keep anyone on edge.
Ling Mo tightly held onto Xia Xinyan and flew into the sky, surveying the area before heading towards the city. Xia Xinyan then noticed the figure of the fat man emerging from the dust of the collapsed building, rushing towards the sky—only to be immediately splattered in the face by a random pile of junk thrown up from below.
The good news was he wasn’t smashed down; the bad news was he was now flailing around like a headless fly.
At that moment, the two of them barely avoided being hit by various flying objects from below, the sound of them slicing through the air almost audible, showing just how fast they were being projected.
Ling Mo conjured a particle shield directly below them, holding it in place while tightening his embrace around Xia Xinyan, his expression serious: “What is that thing?”
Xia Xinyan narrowed her eyes slightly, observing for a moment before giving a precise answer: “Biological bombs.”
She had seen these things in her previous life—little meatballs the size of apples, projected into the sky at an incredibly fast, entirely illogical speed by monsters, much like anti-aircraft artillery; once they hit something, they would explode.
During the expedition, flying vehicles had often been taken down by these; while the direct damage wasn’t large, these carried corrosive abilities, and getting hit multiple times could easily perforate an aircraft. No matter how strong the transport was, it couldn’t withstand such a fierce assault.
One could say it was the demons’ exclusive anti-aircraft equipment, finally filling the gap in their inability to attack from above.
However, she hadn’t expected these things to appear this early; after all, there had been no previous intelligence about biological bombs in the network.
This was a revelation.
Having heard the effects of these bombs, Ling Mo glanced back at the fat man, who was still wildly dodging in the anti-air barrage, and sighed: “Hope he’s alright.”
It seemed most of the monsters had concentrated their fire on Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan since they were still holding firm, which eased some of the pressure off the fat man—though the price was that Ling Mo couldn’t return to help him; both he and Xia Xinyan were too busy saving themselves.
After some consideration, he turned and asked: “Where do we go now?”
“See that mall? We’re heading there.” Xia Xinyan pointed in a direction.
The mall was near the city center, occupying one of the prime locations with presumably a good view, and there weren’t too many high-rises around—at least not like before, where everything collapsed onto the mall. It was relatively safer.
As they flew towards it, Ling Mo also noticed something else: “These biological bombs don’t seem that powerful.”
The energy module of the particle shield connected to his battle armor, allowing him to monitor its consumption; if the biological bombs had corrosive damage, obviously the consumption would rapidly increase after taking multiple hits. But for now, the shield’s consumption remained quite stable, suggesting it only had the damage from the explosion.
“Maybe they haven’t evolved yet,” Xia Xinyan pondered, “We’re quite a bit ahead of the timeline from my previous expedition; they might still be in the evolution phase.”
This was both good news and bad news—the good news was they weren’t as strong as in her past life right now, but the bad news was they’d soon get that strong.
This put quite a bit of pressure on Xia Xinyan.
They were, effectively, racing against time; if they lagged, the consequences would be dire.
So they had to hurry.
Ling Mo brought her to the rooftop of the mall, and then, as if struck by inspiration, he immediately conjured two robots resembling himself and Xia Xinyan, instructing them to fly in another direction with flight packs while deploying surveillance cameras on them, maximizing their utility to draw the monsters’ attention if necessary.
Xia Xinyan then opened communications: “Is everyone alright? Respond.”
“Uh… it’s a freakin’ disaster! Damn it!” came the fat man’s grumbling voice, “What the hell are they throwing? It’s disgusting… I can’t take it anymore; I need a shower.”
“Managed to get out?” Ling Mo chuckled, “As long as you’re alive, that’s the best news. According to Xia Xinyan, these bombs might evolve to have corrosive effects later, so be grateful you’re not a pile of bones yet.”
“…Ugh, can’t we get some normal stuff?” The fat man ground his teeth, “Forget it, I won’t be saying anything more. They caught up with me again, so I’ll try to shake them off, and I’ll draw their fire for you. Good luck!”
Xia Xinyan scanned the surrounding area.
The undead hadn’t pursued them; it seemed they had been drawn away by the two decoys Ling Mo sent out, which proved those creatures weren’t smart enough to take to the air yet.
However, even with the undead being so, they hadn’t encountered true demons yet, which weighed heavily on her mind.
After thinking for a moment, she asked in the communications, “What about Monica? Can you hear me?”
“Loud and clear—wow, you two must be dying to know what we found,” Monica’s tone was teasing yet surprised, “We found something big down in the underground.”
“What did you find?” Xia Xinyan instinctively asked.
But before she could get an answer, the sky suddenly changed, thick clouds rolling in and the light dimming abruptly.
Then, even the ground began to tremble, and Xia Xinyan noticed many buildings nearby starting to collapse; soon after, with a massive roar, large sections of the ground started to sink, as if something was about to break through—the thing truly burst forth from the earth.
It was a… super gigantic Black Castle.
Under the black sky filled with rolling thunderclouds, the massive castle shot up into the air, kicking up vast amounts of dust and debris, the shockwaves rivaling the previous onslaught of undead.
Once the commotion finally settled, this enormous Black Castle stood tall as the highest structure in Cang Hai City—its presence reminiscent of the control tower from the dungeon where Xia Xinyan first met Monica.
Then, Monica’s voice echoed wearily in the communications: “Ah… it seems we accidentally provoked this thing. It stood up.”
Xia Xinyan took a deep breath.
She sensed that this castle was teeming with the aura of demons.
It even instilled a suffocating fear within her.
This was a sentiment she hadn’t felt even when facing the demon army in her previous life.
Noticing the subtle change in her demeanor, Ling Mo took her hand and softly asked, “What’s wrong?”
Xia Xinyan pressed her lips together: “…Something big is about to happen.”
