Chapter 324
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Chapter 308: What to Do
After leaving District 2, the next area I arrived at was District 1, Vaifaart.
This place ruled by arrogance, as per Wilhelm’s intel, was rumored to be drenched in blood and full of corpses, constantly embroiled in conflict—the perfect domain for demons…
“Well, well, let’s see how it is… Ha ha. Oh boy…”
Just like before, I looked down from the wall separating District 2 from District 1. The streets of District 1 were a mess, with walls in tatters and the ground stained a dark red from blood.
In one corner, several bodies were scattered, with demons still fighting in the very midst of the town.
“If they keep this up every day, you’d think the residents would vanish soon—but why don’t they? It’s really strange.”
Human lives are limited, and so are demon lives.
Logically thinking, if they’re killing each other daily, you’d expect those living in this area to eventually disappear, yet even with a quick use of detection magic, it seemed like there were nearly a thousand demons still hanging around.
“Plus, why are these guys preparing for war while fighting among themselves? That’s bound to reduce their fighting power; what are they even thinking?”
Is the arrogant leader here just an idiot with no plans, or does he have a way to replenish his forces even after losing these guys?
I didn’t really need to know which it was, so I figured I could just ignore it.
“Well then. Soware said the moon spirit might be in dungeons or something, but I might as well check this area for good measure.”
Saying that, I cast detection magic to cover all of District 1 from up on the wall, and the magic picked up a faint response that shouldn’t be here for some odd reason.
“Huh? Why is this reaction here?”
Curious about that, I hadn’t intended to stop by this district, but I decided to change my plans and perform my third leap from the wall.
“Ha ha. At this rate, it feels like I’m going to have to visit every district.”
It was a hassle, but I couldn’t let the response I found go unnoticed, so I gently landed on the ground.
“What’s that?”
“Someone just dropped down from above?”
“An enemy?”
At that moment.
The demons in District 1 noticed my presence and turned toward me, approaching with sadistic grins as if they’d just found new prey.
“Hey, you! Are you a newcomer?”
“If you’re new, you should greet us first.”
“We’ll teach you the rules here, but you’d better hand over everything you’ve got.”
It was amusing how, despite being different races, their approach and banter were straight out of a human bandit playbook, exuding a ridiculous small-time villain vibe despite their massive sizes.
“Ugh. I couldn’t care less about your rules, just clear the way. If you do, I won’t do anything.”
“Who do you think you are, punk? Hiding your face with a hood, show yourself!”
“Ha ha. Are you embarrassed to show your weak race? Then I’ll help you take it off!”
“Seriously, what a hassle.”
As I spoke, I sidestepped the demon’s arm reaching for my collar, delivered an elbow strike from above, and then kicked that arm upward with my knee from below.
“Ugh!!!”
“Ah ha ha! You’re toughening up even as I break your arm, aren’t you?”
The demon man, whose arm I had just broken in an instant, let out a slight groan of unexpected pain but quickly distanced himself, taking a defensive stance with his other arm.
“Who are you?!”
“That movement is something else!”
“What do we do? Should we all rush him?”
“No. Let’s observe a bit longer. That small guy seems to be quite the expert. We’ll wait for his moves before taking him down.”
“Yeah.”
Got it.
They might’ve seemed like complete idiots fighting all the time, but they had a decent ability to assess the situation; it looked like they were trying to gauge my moves before engaging.
“Well then, let’s play a bit. Yesterday was so boring since it only required tactics—this should be good exercise.”
“Ha! To think you’d consider exercising against me! In that case, die while you’re at it!”
The demon man said this as he charged at me, throwing a punch with his left arm, but I deflected it with just my palm, lightly sweeping his supporting foot out from under him.
“Whoa?!”
Just like that, losing his balance, the man stumbled forward and fell flat on his face, exposing his defenseless back to me.
“Ha ha! Can’t use your right arm, huh? Balance is totally out the window!”
“Ahhh!!”
With that, I stomped down hard on the demon man’s knee, making a loud crack as his bones broke, audible even to the demons around.
“Now you can’t stand up. But don’t worry, I won’t kill you this time.”
“C-Crap…!”
Usually, anyone who showed aggression toward me would meet an end without mercy, but since these guys were the subordinates of an arrogant leader, I couldn’t just kill them as I pleased.
Though based on the state of this town, it’s clear that the arrogant leader doesn’t seem to be the caring type, I had no intention of declaring war here, so I decided to let them all slide this time.
“Enough with the observing nonsense—just come at me already. I’ll take you all on at once.”
“Tch! You’re underestimating us!”
“No more spectators! You guys! This time, let’s all team up and take him down!”
“Die, you punk!!”
Instead of running after seeing their comrades taken down in an instant, the prideful demons couldn’t resist the provocation and rushed in all at once.
“Ha ha! Just a little more entertainment for me!”
Thus, a chaotic battle began between me and the hundreds of demons, and for the first time in ages, feeling the rush of a proper fight, I got so into it that I almost forgot to hold back a bit.
“Phew~. That was some decent exercise.”
It seemed like the demons here had higher individual abilities than those I fought regularly among the clan and the ogres from Bagira’s side; by the end of it, I felt surprisingly satisfied.
“Ah… ugh…”
“It hurts…”
“My precious horns…!”
Speaking of which, what do I even call this gruesome sight?
Around me lay demons who had lost limbs, eyes, and their trademark horns and wings, while the ground was gouged and buildings were crumbling.
“Well, at least you’re still alive, so you should be thanking me, you know? Normally, you’d all be dead by now.”
While thinking they should be grateful to be alive regardless of their pain, I began walking through the fallen demons, finally heading toward my original intended destination.
“Alright, time to check on that situation.”
As I moved on, kindly knocking aside any demon that tried to attack me, I finally reached the location of the reaction I was curious about. There stood a dilapidated building that looked so awful it seemed it would collapse if I even touched it.
“Hmmm, down below?”
Cautiously entering to avoid the building collapsing, I used detection magic to scan the structure and its floors, discovering that there seemed to be a secret passage hidden deep inside where the response was coming from.
“Man, I would’ve left this alone if it weren’t for you.”
Grumbling, I stepped into the secret passage, descending underground without hesitation, moving deeper into the space and opening a door to enter.
“Hey, Headmaster.”
And there she was, indeed, the headmaster, Mejina, unconscious and bound at the arms and legs, fixed to the wall. From her arms, strange tubes extended somewhere.
“Haah. What on earth happened?”
I was curious as to how someone like Mejina ended up captured, but I also thought this situation might very well tie into why she had gone missing in the first place, so while looking upon her still-unconscious form, I contemplated what to do next.
“Ordinarily, the choice would be to rescue her, but the real question is whether it benefits me.”
Normally, if someone I knew was captured like this, helping would be the obvious decision, but regrettably, I’m not exactly normal.
Even if it’s someone like Mejina whom I’ve had a spar with, if there’s no benefit for me, there’s no reason to help.
“Well, let’s check to see what happened first, then.”
However, even though I planned to check, if I woke her up, we’d have to deal with the awkward conversation about why I’m here, so this time, I decided to see her memories directly.
“Just in case, I’ll cast some magic to keep her from waking up. ‘Sleep,’ and then ‘Memory Exploration.’”
As I spoke, I touched her head, and suddenly her memories began flowing into me.
“Ugh. There’s just too many memories.”
However, since these were other people’s memories and because she’d been kidnapped quite some time ago, the sheer volume overwhelmed me, pounding my head with intense pain.
“Haah, haah… I see. Mutant monster variants in human form, and the demons controlling them.”
Following through Mejina’s memories, it seemed she had been abducted during that demon investigation I mentioned earlier; apparently, it was a trap set to lure her in.
As soon as Mejina arrived, the demons erected a barrier to seal her magic, then manipulated the human-shaped monsters to capture her.
“That was about two months ago. Which means it hasn’t been long since she was brought here.”
Chronologically speaking, after coming to my room before departing, Mejina headed to the village where the investigation request came from and fell into a trap there.
Afterward, while she was being transported to the demon domain, I had received my invitation from Wilhelm and headed there, which resulted in Mejina arriving here just a bit earlier than I did.
“Hmm. I get the background, but what to do next…”
“Hee hee hee. Oh, looks like we have a guest!”
As I was figuring out what to do next after getting the general situation down, I suddenly felt a presence approaching from behind, accompanied by a hoarse voice.
