Chapter 302

The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide

Episode 286: Fourth District

As I stepped into the Demon Nation Imperial, following Wilhelm while being glared at by the gatekeeper, I was momentarily taken aback by the sight of the town, and instinctively halted my feet.

“This is surprising.”

“Is something the matter?”

“No, it just looked different from what I had imagined.”

What I envisioned for a demon’s city—though it might be prejudiced—was a desolate land with dilapidated buildings that seemed ready to crumble at any moment.

And everywhere, corpses and traces of blood, filled with stagnant air and the stench of decay.

That’s what I had imagined, but the actual town that sprawled before me was the complete opposite.

“A beautifully paved road with well-coordinated, beautiful buildings. The air is clear, and there’s no foul smell at all. Not a single corpse or even noticeable trash to be found. This might even be a better place than the Imperial Capital.”

If I were to nitpick, it would be that all the buildings were uniformly black, but by unifying them in a single color, it matched the ambiance of this place, constantly shrouded in darkness, creating a solemn atmosphere rather than fear.

“Hmm. I can roughly guess what kind of town you were imagining from what you just said, but at least this Fourth District doesn’t fit that description.”

“Huh? What’s this Fourth District all about?”

“Well then. Until we reach our destination, allow me to give you a brief explanation of this country.”

As Wilhelm said that, he began walking through the town, and I nodded at his remark, slowly following him.

“First of all, the Demon Nation Imperial is divided into seven large districts, and at its center lies the castle for the Demon King.”

“Hmm. It’s as if the town was built around that castle.”

“Indeed, you’re right. According to the history that remains among demons, this area was once a barren land with nothing at all, and it was also a dangerous place where powerful monsters roamed. The land was corrupted by miasma and the corpses of monsters, there was no water, no sunlight, and crops couldn’t grow. Furthermore, due to the territorial disputes among the monsters, the land was devastated, making it a place so dreadful it was referred to as a death zone.”

“It’s hard to imagine that from the sight in front of me now.”

“Yes. However, it was our ancestors who first established a nation in that so-called death zone, the representatives who managed the seven districts back then. They banded together to repel the powerful monsters, first building a castle to symbolize the Demon King, and then gathering their fellow demons to this place. After many demons gathered, the representatives created seven districts centered around the castle, with each gathered demon separating and forming their own rules under their respective leaders, evolving into the shape they desired.”

“I see.”

Wilhelm’s story was quite fascinating, and as someone who had never known such tales in my past life, it was immensely interesting.

“So, it means that now, each district can be seen as a small nation by itself?”

“Exactly. Thus, while such dreadful districts as the one you mentioned do indeed exist, this district is governed under solid rules by its representative, resulting in such an atmosphere here. Although that doesn’t mean there are no conflicts at all.”

“Like those gatekeepers from earlier. Got it. By the way, do the districts have names?”

“They do.”

Summarizing the features and names of each district that Wilhelm explained, they are as follows:

The First District, Vaifart, where endless strife abounds, filled with the smell of rotting corpses and blood.

The Second District, Afisgaits, which is unusual for demons as it thrives on commerce.

The Third District, Anvinight, rich in nature, where houses are built among the trees, leading a unique lifestyle.

The Fourth District, Crowfen, known as the most beautiful town among all the districts.

The Fifth District, Ragrest, overflowing with male romance, said to be a place where once you enter, you wouldn’t want to return.

The Sixth District, Ferelgia, currently lacking a representative, unofficially inhabited by homeless demons and those who don’t seek interaction with others.

The Seventh District, Okupalestie, a realm between dreams and reality, perpetually enveloped in silence.

This nation is divided by these seven districts, each governed under rules set by their representatives.

By the way, I found myself in the Fourth District, Crowfen, which is one of the more popular districts among demons due to its cleanliness compared to the others.

“Also, the castle in the center is called Redizaia and is currently used as a meeting place for the representatives.”

“I see. But going by your earlier statement, there’s currently no representative in the Sixth District?”

“Correct. However, the absence of a representative in the Sixth District isn’t a new occurrence; it has been unrepresented since the founding of this country.”

“Huh? That long?”

Although I’m not sure how long the Imperial has existed, to establish a nation of this scale, it couldn’t have been done in just a few hundred years, meaning the Sixth District has been without a representative for quite an extended period.

“Why doesn’t the Sixth District appoint a representative?”

“Because there hasn’t been one. A suitable candidate hasn’t appeared.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Representatives are chosen based on possessing true power befitting their position. It’s a distinct ability that isn’t magical; it is rare and unique, with no other like it in this world.”

“Hmm. So, it means no one with such power has ever appeared before?”

“Exactly.”

“That’s interesting.”

I didn’t know what this special power Wilhelm mentioned was, but if it exists, I was definitely curious to experience it myself.

“What is that power…”

“Oops, let’s save that discussion for another time. That’s all I can share about it for now. By the way, have you felt anything since you arrived in the demon territory?”

Wilhelm said, abruptly changing the topic, throwing an ambiguous and rather vague question at me.

“Felt something?”

“Yes. Anything at all. It could be complaints about feeling uneasy or heavy, or conversely, praise about feeling good or energized. By the way, I would be happy if it were the latter.”

“I really don’t care about your feelings, but, well…”

As I responded to Wilhelm’s question, I crossed my arms, reflecting on my experiences since leaving the Empire, entering the demon territory, and now arriving here.

“Now that I think about it, it actually feels somewhat nice. It’s sort of nostalgic. Huh? But why? This is my first time in the demon area after all…”

No matter how much I tried to recall past experiences, while I had studied demons using books and materials before, this was indeed the first time I had set foot in the demon territory in this life.

Yet, why was I feeling a sense of comfort and nostalgia upon arriving here?

No matter how much I pondered that reason, I couldn’t find any satisfactory answer.

“Indeed…”

As I got lost in thought, Wilhelm seemed to mutter something in response to my reaction, but I missed it as I was too focused on my reflections.

“What was that…”

“Oh, look, we’ve arrived. This will be your place during your stay.”

Following Wilhelm’s gaze, I saw a grand mansion with black walls before me, its size rivaling that of noble houses in the Imperial Capital.

“You will be living in this mansion during your stay in this country. Do you have any complaints?”

“No, it’s more than enough.”

“That’s great to hear. Actually, while you were in the Imperial Capital, I toured the noble houses and instructed my subordinates to build this one to make your stay more comfortable.”

“Huh? You had this built from scratch?”

“Yes. If you didn’t like it, I would have had to kill the subordinates who built it, so it’s great that I didn’t have to deal with that hassle.”

“I see…”

“If you didn’t like it, I would kill them.”

That’s such a typical demon way of thinking! But if Wilhelm was the one who ordered the construction of this mansion, wouldn’t he have to be the first one to take the blame?

That kind of arrogance, or rather, that selfish way of thinking and feeling, really reminded me that at his core, he’s just another demon like any other.
