Chapter 236
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Chapter 229: Aim High
“Is nobody here? It’s really quiet.”
“Yeah, it is.”
After breaking the gate with magic, we stepped into the royal castle. Unlike the bustling streets just earlier, this place was eerily silent, not even a hint of a presence, not even the slightest hostility aimed at us.
“Did they send all their forces to take care of us in the town, or do they think it’s fine if no one’s here?”
“Well, either way, what we need to do hasn’t changed. Let’s hurry.”
“Right. Just as Is said, what we need to do remains the same.”
Regardless of what the enemy might be plotting, what we had to do and the outcome we desired were unchanged.
(Well, desires are just desires, and whether they actually happen depends on how hard Sharueina tries.)
We then slowly walked down the corridor lit by moonlight coming through the windows, heading toward the throne room where Rogurando was likely waiting.
As we opened the massive door leading to the throne room, there sat a white-haired man on the throne, with Fūshiru standing beside him with his arms crossed.
“…You’ve come.”
The man slowly opened his previously shut eyes, blood-red and sharp-eyed, and with that alone, the ominous aura and pressure that filled the room intensified.
(Well, this is turning out to be more interesting than I thought.)
The demon currently possessing Rogurando was undoubtedly an S-rank high-level demon, but due to the original Rogurando’s strength, the aura he exuded was even approaching SS-rank levels.
Seeing Rogurando like that, Sharueina couldn’t hide her surprise, showing slight agitation, yet she wasn’t breaking down or trying to escape reality; she stared firmly at him.
“Uncle.”
“Sharueina, huh? I never expected you to come here.”
“Is it really you, Uncle…?”
“Hmph. Uncle, you say. I suppose so. I was indeed your uncle, and I remember those times. But I am no longer the uncle you knew. I have no feelings for you, nor do I desire anything. So, when you ask if I’m your uncle, I can’t say for sure.”
To my surprise, it seemed that even after twelve years, he still retained his consciousness as Rogurando; he remembered Sharueina and was able to respond to her conversation quite calmly.
Normally, one possessed by demons who attacked in Saramāju would have lost their self and be unable to hold a calm conversation due to demon’s greed.
“Uncle! Why did you contract with a demon?!”
“Ah, you realized. Well, yes. I did contract with a demon to survive after I was executed back then. But isn’t that normal? Humans are creatures that fear death, right? Therefore, humans have sought immortality since ancient times and yearn for beings close to immortality. I’m the same. Besides, you already know why I rebelled, right?”
“That is…”
“I simply could not give up on becoming Emperor. I couldn’t discard that desire, nor could I satisfy it. That’s why I made the contract. To fulfill that desire, to fulfill my wishes… I sought power for that purpose.”
Though Rogurando explained at length, the essence was that he could not abandon his desire to become Emperor until the end and sought power through contracting with a demon to fulfill that desire.
“For such a reason… You betrayed Father for such a reason?! You wanted to be Emperor, and that was enough to betray him?!”
“For such a reason, you say? You don’t understand anything, Sharueina. The Emperor is, essentially, the god of a nation. I have always wanted to be the one at the very top. I want to dominate everything and move it as I please. I am not one to serve under someone else. I am the one worthy of the pinnacle, the one fit to govern this world. That is why I will reach for that seat again and again. Until the moment I grasp everything in this world for myself.”
(All the world, huh? That’s quite a lofty dream.)
It’s often said to aim high in dreams, but seeing Rogurando speak of such grand ambitions might as well be dismissed as mere delusions, so detached from reality were his desires.
After all, in a situation where I don’t even know how many continents exist in this world, talking about governing the world sounds utterly ridiculous. With higher beings like fantasy races and gods in this world, there’s no way someone as insignificant as him could govern anything.
(Well, dreaming is free, after all. Letting him dream freely might be a kindness.)
While I was thinking about that, the conversation between Sharueina and Rogurando continued, but since they were staring in completely different directions, their conversation couldn’t possibly intersect and ultimately ended up on parallel lines.
“Enough already. Sharueina, I’m tired of talking with you. Being my niece won’t spare you. You will die here.”
“No! I will stop you, Uncle!”
Rogurando drew the black great sword stabbed beside him and slowly stood up.
Similarly, Sharueina placed her hand on the hilt of her sword, focusing her mind so she could draw at any moment.
“Fūshiru. You handle that kid beside Sharueina.”
“Uh, wait…”
“What’s wrong?”
“Well, that is—”
Fūshiru, standing beside him, showed a puzzled expression as he was suddenly called upon, and it seemed he was unsure of what to do, especially being told to deal with me.
“Ahaha.”
Amidst the tension surrounding us, I couldn’t help but laugh at Fūshiru’s flustered reaction. I sat down, creating a water cushion and relaxed while I explained the situation.
“Rogurando. Nice to meet you. I’m Lewis Valentine.”
“Valentine? So, you’re Edward’s kid? Not a strong resemblance.”
“Well, I take after my mother. More importantly, you’re curious about Fūshiru here, right? Shall I tell you?”
“Did you do something to him?”
“To put it simply, I drew him out when we met in that space created by an artifact. I’m offering to aid your goals, so he should help me too. In other words, he’s no longer your ally and won’t listen to you. So you won’t be fighting me.”
“I see. But I find it hard to believe that such a proud Fūshiru would listen to you so easily. What did you do?”
“I just played around a bit.”
“You?”
“Correct.”
“Tch. This has become troublesome. I was planning to kill you after killing Sharueina, but should I kill you first instead?”
Now aware that I possessed more power than he imagined, Rogurando glared at me grimly, but I smiled reassuringly back at him.
“Don’t worry. I won’t do anything to you. Instead, Sharueina here will deal with you.”
“What did you say?”
“Yes. I will stop you, Uncle. Is is just a mere spectator and won’t join this battle.”
“Ha! Hahaha!”
As Sharueina said this with a serious expression, Rogurando suddenly burst into loud laughter, looking at her as though mocking her.
“YOU? The one to face me? What can you possibly do with that level of power? Just from looking, I can tell. Your muscles, your breathing, your footwork, and your magic power. All of it indicates that you fall short before me. Even so, are you truly going to stand against me? You’d have a better chance by working with that Edward’s kid over there.”
“No! I will fight alone. As royalty and as your niece, it is my duty to fulfill this alone. Even if it costs me my life!”
“Hahaha! Truly amusing! Very well! Come at me, Sharueina! It’ll be entertaining to kill you here and show your foolish brother your head!”
With that, Rogurando laughed cruelly and unleashed a swirling dark magic power.
In response, Sharueina surrounded herself with blue magic as she braced herself, but her expression looked pained, as if she would be crushed by Rogurando’s magic at any moment.
“Alright then. Do your best not to bore me while I watch.”
In such a tense situation, my words, which could be taken as arrogant, signified the beginning of combat as both Sharueina and Rogurando, having readied their swords, finally moved to engage in battle after their lengthy conversation.
