Volume 4 Chapter 67: “Demon”
The scene before Subaru was utterly incomprehensible to him.
In a pool of blood lay Ram, and next to her, the headless corpse of Garfiel. By the side of their overlapping bodies was Roswaal, casually brushing off the hem of his outfit.
Having witnessed such an incredible display of physical prowess, Subaru found it hard to believe that this was an act committed by Roswaal.
Roswaal L. Meiastars was said to be the court magician representing the Lugnica Kingdom, possessing combat prowess comparable to a tactical weapon capable of wielding supreme magic.
He had heard such things. It was precisely because he had heard them that Subaru never imagined Roswaal could show such destructive power in a situation where magic was unusable.
“Thinking that magicians can’t handle close combat is just a complete preconception, you know? When someone with ill intent confronts me, of course, everyone thinks that way. …But, well, you can see how those stubborn folks have ended up, can’t you?”
Caught off guard by Roswaal’s response that seemed to capture Subaru’s silent sentiments, he involuntarily gasped.
Roswaal gently traced the blood splattered on his face with his fingers, overlaying red lacquer on his blue eyeliner while wearing a smile. —Indeed, it was correct to think of him as demonic, as if he might swallow you whole.
“W-why…”
“Hmm?”
“Why did you… kill the two of them…? Ram was killed, and Garfiel, Garfiel didn’t need to die…!”
“Since Garfiel would’ve been a nuisance while conversing with you, I couldn’t have him around. As for Ram, I do feel somewhat remorseful for what I did. However, it’s not that I’m strong enough to confront Garfiel head-on. I was only able to kill him because I caught him off guard.”
So it was this “off guard” that allowed him to penetrate Garfiel along with Ram.
As Roswaal nonchalantly explained his reasons for killing the two, Subaru’s emotions swung wildly from rage to a cold calm.
Nonsensical situations come with equally nonsensical explanations. If he was trying to toy with Subaru, then losing his temper would suit Roswaal’s intentions perfectly.
“……”
“Well, this is surprising. I thought you would rage at my words.”
“I’m not angry… just, I lost track of my feelings from all the chaos. …But I’m not calm either. Obviously.”
“Is that so? While that’s a commendable attitude, if we’re talking about the Nakuki Subaru I knew, it would be completely natural for you to be recklessly infuriated and foam at the mouth at a time like this. Right, Nakuki Subaru-kun?”
Winking with one eye, Roswaal’s yellow gaze locked onto Subaru.
He realized that Roswaal sometimes watched him with just one eye, always the one that sparkled yellow.
Seeing himself reflected in that bright yellow made Subaru feel an intense discomfort.
“I know I did some dumb things, but that doesn’t mean I’m not growing. I understand it’s not the time to be mad…”
“That’s not it, Subaru-kun. You see, Nakuki Subaru—”
With a flick of his azure hair, Roswaal mockingly called out Subaru’s name with his untainted left hand, free from blood.
Subaru sensed something sinister about this demeanor, yet he didn’t back away. Instead, he stepped forward, glaring at the jester’s face.
“What do you want to say?”
“Well, if you ask me what I’m trying to say, I would say this to you: —Congratulations. Welcome. I’ve been waiting for you to stand there.”
A shiver ran down Subaru’s spine, as if his spine were touched by wet fingertips.
Before him, Roswaal was gazing at Subaru with a joyful expression, as he had declared. In that demeanor, in that joy, Subaru felt an inexplicable sense of revulsion.
This wasn’t sarcasm or anything; Roswaal genuinely felt happiness towards Subaru. The issue was that he wouldn’t understand the meaning behind his words nor the meaning of that joy.
“You were… waiting for me to stand here?”
“Please don’t make the cliché mistake of thinking that I meant this specific place in this room, okay? You should understand that I don’t mean it that way. You alone should be able to grasp that.”
“I alone should… understand?”
The pieces of a puzzle lacking its full picture began to fit together in Subaru’s mind, slowly but surely. As the pieces connected hesitantly, a hazy completion started to take form.
As he pondered the implications of that completeness, a feeling of disbelief pierced through him.
“Do you understand, Subaru-kun? You know why, even when faced with the deaths of the two, you stay oddly calm and keep your composure without going berserk… You truly know the reason why.”
“——”
“You aren’t that shocked by their deaths. You are shocked by the fact that they lost their lives. You most definitely feel a sense of righteous indignation too. However, you aren’t experiencing sorrow. That’s why you are unable to be angry here, unable to raise a fist against me.”
With Roswaal’s knowing tone, Subaru opened his mouth to refute, but once again he found himself unable to say anything, caught in a loop of silence.
‘What do you know! Is there a way I could not feel sadness over their deaths? How dare you kill Ram and Garfiel, you monster!’
There were endless phrases he could think of to scream in response.
In all truth, those explosive feelings had been rising inside Subaru and kept flaring up in his throat, threatening to spill out, only to disappear repeatedly.
He was angry. He was surprised. He was sad too, no doubt.
But even so, Subaru couldn’t refute Roswaal’s words—because…
“—You think it’s something that can be undone, don’t you?”
“You…!”
The sheer terror of that revelation gripped Subaru’s heart, freezing his throat.
No figure of speech here; he had the distinct impression his heart had been grabbed by something. It was that shocking.
Lifting his gaze, Subaru couldn’t help but look around, fearing the black hand might appear to punish him for breaking the taboo. This was the first penalty since he denied the existence of the Witch of Envy. The mere thought of what kind of horror that shadow would bring back twisted his heart in agony.
But—
“…It won’t come.”
“I don’t know what you’re on guard for… but ah, it might be due to your contract with her. I see, this could be problematic. That means, much of your previous behavior and statements can finally be explained.”
“Explained…? No, before that!”
As Roswaal nodded with his hand on his chin, Subaru paled, his lips trembling.
Roswaal’s current statement undoubtedly touched on the core of Subaru’s being; being touched there meant—
“You… know about my situation…?!”
“As long as it’s not outside the written records, you do possess a means to redo things, don’t you?”
Roswaal’s declaration that he knew about “Return by Death” left Subaru gasping, and he quickly realized the precariousness of the situation.
The conditions were now precisely the same as at Echidna’s tea party.
If they continued discussing “Return by Death” as a given, the tragedy where the “Sanctuary” would be swallowed by shadows would repeat itself.
And even now, at this moment, the Witch could have come to snatch Subaru away.
Taking a deep breath, Subaru exhaled deeply while confirming that time wasn’t frozen.
In other words, there wasn’t a penalty gripping the heart of the Witch. While it was a relief for him, the most benign option just vanished.
The remaining option was—
“—Who was it that left behind, ‘Silence is a sign of affirmation’?”
With his mind racing, Subaru kicked into high gear to avoid danger, but Roswaal’s voice pierced through his tumultuous thoughts, as if he was fed up.
For Roswaal, this statement must have carried considerable weight as well.
Subaru, who had turned a blind eye to it, met Roswaal’s rare, displeased frown as he continued.
“Well, it’s a ridiculous story. One might say it’s more benevolent by not using such boring tricks, though.”
“O—”
“Oh, don’t worry. I brought it up myself, but I imagine it wouldn’t be good for you to respond with affirmation. That’s why you’ve been unable to bring it forth until now, right? To be honest…”
He cut off Subaru’s forthcoming words with a single note, then Roswaal spoke meaningfully.
Subaru gnawed his lip as Roswaal sent a teasing glance his way, loosening his lips sensually.
“You might’ve feared how you’d be looked at if you admitted it, huh?”
“——–!”
“That’s indeed the case. Because the power to redo the world is something beyond imagination! To interfere with time—this is the ultimate of the shadow lineage. Even Beatrice can only manage to create stagnation; reversing time is just a dream within a dream.”
Subaru’s face stiffened with shock as Roswaal unexpectedly brought up Beatrice’s name while closing down his counters to any rebuttals.
He vividly recalled the last expression on her face as she was pierced by Elsa’s blade from behind, a flashback that hit him hard.
“—From that reaction, it appears Beatrice has fulfilled her role.”
“Her role…? You knew her… that…”
Taking advantage of the tangent away from “Return by Death”, Subaru pulled himself back from the mental waves that had swept over him and lunged at Roswaal’s calm demeanor.
Did he know how lonely Beatrice had cried out?
“You knew how she has been chained in that mansion, clinging to an age-old contract as her sole hope… You knew how she had worn down so much, eventually shrinking into such a state, didn’t you?!”
“Of course, I knew that. My relationship with Beatrice is long-standing, since we were born, to be precise. I’ve always been aware of the loneliness she harbors.”
“If that’s true…!”
“Don’t say something like, ‘Why didn’t you do anything to help her?’ It’s something you must understand too; could anyone truly alter her sorrow? ”
Roswaal’s cold logic struck Subaru’s heart, which wanted to shout in anger.
He could denounce Roswaal’s actions and make him hear Beatrice’s cries of despair. He could, but in reality, none of that would carry any meaning.
Beatrice was already dead, and her sorrow could not be healed by anyone.
The only one who can witness the end of her suffering repeatedly was Subaru, who carried the means to redo things. But how could one heal four hundred years of sorrow?
Four hundred years—such means to reverse time was a luxury beyond even Subaru.
Before Subaru, who fell silent, Roswaal shook his head slightly.
Then he said,
“I envy you.”
“—You envy me?”
Subaru’s voice, now low, returned the question. But Roswaal, oblivious to the timbre of his voice, nodded.
“I envy you. Beatrice was able to fulfill her wish and fade away. The fact that you are here means something like that, doesn’t it?”
“Her wish… you mean, her dying like that was what she desired?! You—are you really saying that?!”
“Wasn’t it truly Beatrice’s wish? No one else can comment on that, nor can anyone contradict the value she placed on it. Neither you nor even I have the right to mar Beatrice’s death.”
That sounded all too plausible. A cold, hard truth. It was a fact that didn’t belong to others.
Subaru and Beatrice were ultimately strangers. Subaru had never comprehended Beatrice’s wish, nor had he ever thought to fulfill it.
But still, did Beatrice truly feel content with that?
—Then why did Beatrice shield Subaru in her final moments?
“Beatrice fulfilled her wish. I can only feel envy for that. —It seems my wish is something I can’t achieve by myself.”
“——-”
There was something distinctly off about the way he spoke.
Even now, he couldn’t quite grasp what felt off about it.
However, there was definitely something out of place.
“Your… wish is…”
“I can’t say that. It’s a contract I can’t reveal. All I can say is that—this is the utmost limit of what I can concede in terms of the contract. Yet, I can say this much.”
“——-”
“I have always put my utmost effort into realizing my wish. I intend to make no actions that would shame me, you see?”
Roswaal boldly declared he felt no shame about his actions.
After being struck by such a confession, dark anger slowly surged up within Subaru.
It was a selfish rage that had left unresolved feelings and thoughts behind before he came here. Even though he thought this wasn’t right, he couldn’t push that feeling away.
“Necessary things, you say…? For killing Ram and Garfiel, and then burying the Sanctuary in snow, you honestly think all of that was necessary?!”
“Hmm, as for the first point… no, let’s not get into that. Regarding the latter, I’ll agree that’s correct.”
“For what?!”
With bared teeth, Subaru flailed his arms wildly, shouting.
“For what reason are you doing this? You bring snow to the Sanctuary, tormenting its residents… what is your goal?! What meaning does this have?! Say it, Roswaal!!”
“It’s obvious. —Lady Emilia will be isolated.”
“—What?!”
“I’ll say it again. By causing snow to fall and harming the residents, Lady Emilia will be isolated and fall into a very unstable mental state. Is that not the case?”
Roswaal spoke as if he’d witnessed it firsthand. Emilia’s condition, deep within the graveyard, was evidently unfolding just as Roswaal had intended.
He had no intention of relaying that to Subaru. Above all, the true meaning of Roswaal’s words now were, without a doubt, the most confusing he’d encountered.
“This is a land associated with witches, and Lady Emilia is currently undergoing a trial to liberate the Sanctuary. So, when a localized disaster strikes the Sanctuary like this… what kind of glances will be cast at Lady Emilia?”
“You…!”
“An impulsive Garfiel will play a part in this. He would be the first to doubt Lady Emilia and raise a ruckus about it. Because of his loud voice, it would establish how everyone thinks—this disaster stems from Lady Emilia’s actions.”
Roswaal had read Subaru correctly. Garfiel danced right above Roswaal’s palm. Garfiel had been convinced that this extreme cold within the “Sanctuary” was the result of Emilia’s doing from the very onset.
Despite there being a “capable individual” elsewhere, the groundwork still remained for all the malice to be aimed at Emilia.
That very malice was the very demon that had caused Emilia to suffer for so long.
“What will happen to isolated Lady Emilia? The truth is, she is a fragile person at heart. It’s not strange that she would want to entrust her all to someone who affirms her existence. And if that someone felt the desire to support Lady Emilia with all their heart, it would be a win-win.”
“Wait… wait… waitwaitwaitwait…!”
Subaru attempted to halt Roswaal’s comments, stretching his arm out to stop him.
At this moment, it felt like he was hearing something immensely alarming.
It felt like something monstrous that he shouldn’t hear was being revealed—
“You won’t be able to push away an Emilia that becomes dependent on you. Naturally, since you love her. If you are someone whom the beloved Lady Emilia has entrusted everything to, you won’t be able to shake that off.”
“Such a—”
That couldn’t be right.
It shouldn’t be like that.
He had chosen to endure when Emilia clung to him in the graveyard. He had restrained himself and still made it here.
He couldn’t completely brush away the sweet whispers of love and temptation from Emilia.
But since he knew that wasn’t her true heart, he shouldn’t collapse entirely into that temptation—
“You’d answer, ‘Not in this moment.’ I suppose that’s a shameful thing for me. Right now, you would have too much excess baggage weighing you down.”
As Roswaal took a quiet step toward the writhing Subaru, the sound of his footsteps echoed in the bloodstained snow, making Subaru involuntarily shudder.
With long limbs swaying, Roswaal approached Subaru, who gulped.
“Are you… intending to kill me—?”
“Kill you? That’s a rather brutal way to think. I’d have a hard time if you were to die. No matter what, I must have you redo your past, you see?”
“Eh—?”
Subaru was momentarily speechless at Roswaal’s advancing words.
But he soon realized the discrepancies in his words along with the perception of the reality they were in.
Roswaal knew that Subaru could redo his actions, but he didn’t realize it was through “Return by Death”, triggered by death.
So, until Subaru chose to “redo” of his own volition, Roswaal appeared intent on cornering him. Perhaps that would entail pain beyond just an instant death.
If Roswaal bore no intent to harm Subaru, there might still be a chance.
“—Everyone, come in!!”
Raising his hand, Subaru shouted.
At the moment Roswaal frowned at his shout, the doors and windows of the room, along with those from the adjoining living room, were shattered. A gust of cold wind burst inside, and a small shadow surged in all at once—twenty figures, all matching the characteristics of a girl with pale pink hair.
As all of them, looking strikingly similar, lined up, Roswaal squinted an eye and looked at Subaru.
“I thought control of the replicas had transferred to Garfiel?”
“You think you can just run this place without a backup, huh? —I had my cards up my sleeve.”
This was after the confrontation with Garfiel when Subaru had exited the graveyard.
Convinced Garfiel would charge at Roswaal, Subaru had instead managed to convince him to formally transfer control of the replicas from Garfiel to himself within the Crystal Room.
He stationed the replicas of Ryuzu outside Roswaal’s place to prepare for a sudden assault.
The one who had been a hostage, Rem, was entrusted to Ryuzu as a representative and taken to the Cathedral where the evacuated townsfolk and residents were gathering.
All of this was based on the assumption that Roswaal would be the one executing this heinous act.
—However, the deaths of Garfiel and Ram at the hands of Roswaal had been entirely outside of Subaru’s expectations.
“So, what are you planning to do by surrounding me then?”
“While it shocked me that you’re that strong even unarmed, against overwhelming numbers, it should still be difficult for you. If you’re as ridiculous as a beastified Garfiel, then grouping up would be troublesome…”
Roswaal had penetrated Garfiel along with Ram because he hadn’t won out on a gamble against Garfiel. Regardless, he was undoubtedly stronger than Subaru—
“I’ll suppress you with sheer numbers, overwhelming you and demanding you divulge whatever else you’ve been hiding.”
“You should know how crucial it is to adhere to the contract, given your circumstances.”
“Unfortunately, I was forced into a contract against my will, and when I tried to break it, it enforced punitive measures upon me. The fact that none are being applied now means I’m still safe!”
With twenty members crammed into the small house, it got nearly unbearably tight.
The expressionless replicas of Ryuzu Meier launched themselves at Roswaal as they complied with Subaru’s call, still looking dazed.
Roswaal, barehanded, could only obviously deal with two opponents at a time.
The weather manipulation he’d been exercising became his downfall. Unable to cast magic, he was left with no choice but to be washed away by sheer numbers.
Subaru felt assured of his victory despite a tough fight. However—
“—Indeed, while I am outnumbered.”
“—”
“Challenging a magician with numbers is still a foolish decision, you know.”
A fire raced horizontally across the room, incinerating all the replicas of Ryuzu Meier that had been caught within the path.
That wall of flame instantaneously polished off small bodies that stood in its way—turning them to ash and returning them to mana.
In Subaru’s eyes, for a moment, crimson light and waves of heat engulfed the room.
“You can’t use magic…”
“Only while manipulating the weather, yes. But regrettably, the reason I once sent down snow no longer holds any meaning for me. I’ve halted my actions some time ago. I apologize that I didn’t mention it.”
“What—?!”
In the fleeting moment Subaru lost his words, Roswaal closed the distance and seized Subaru by the throat. With seemingly no strength concentrated in those slender arms, Subaru found himself lifted effortlessly from the ground, flailing as Roswaal raised him.
“Fu—!”
With a mighty motion, Roswaal discarded Subaru out of what was left of the half-shattered window in the back. Subaru’s body was tossed onto the snow outside, rolling until he ceased against a wall.
Snow mixed with mud filled his mouth as he coughed while shaking his head and looking up.
Calmly, Roswaal stepped out of the house, bringing the remaining half of the replicas along with him. Since they had no orders, the replicas appeared indecisive.
Yet even Subaru could not figure out what he should say to them.
“Even after all this, still not ‘redoing’, huh? Or maybe you’ve already done so? When I think of it, if a ‘redo’ occurs, then I have no idea how my perception would change. This presents quite the problem, doesn’t it?”
Roswaal made his way over to Subaru, who was down on all fours, while tilting his head.
Staring up at that jester while struggling with pain and shortness of breath, Subaru suddenly blurted out a question that arose without warning.
“Roswaal… you keep mentioning ‘redo’ countless times, but…”
“Hm? What an important topic! Let’s hear it!”
“I wonder about you. It’s insane to act on the premise that others can ‘redo’ things… unless, perhaps, you also—”
What if he had some means of retaining memories?
Just like Echidna, who secluded herself within her dream castle, did Roswaal hold onto Subaru’s memories from before he had ‘Return by Death’?
If not, Subaru simply could not fathom the rationale behind Roswaal’s unwavering desire to urge “redo”.
“If that’s the case, then that’s fine. But if so, couldn’t I al—”
A partnership was possible.
Though Roswaal’s objectives were beyond comprehension and built on wicked foundations.
He had killed Ram and Garfiel, driven Emilia to despair, and there was no way he could ever condone that. However, considering his situation, it felt even less favorable to turn away from Roswaal’s power in cold blood.
Rather, urgency surrounded him.
The saying goes, “poison into poison” when it suits. Subaru was ready to drink the venom.
“—It seems that’s not going to work out, huh?”
Subaru’s frail hope was dashed with Roswaal’s shake of the head.
Then, diverting his gaze from Subaru, Roswaal pointed a finger forward.
“Go on.”
A small flame ignited, and in the direction where Roswaal had pointed, woods began to burn.
Subaru blinked at the abrupt act of devastation, and amidst the sounds of trees crackling as they burned, there was a sound—what seemed to be the small, wailing cries of animals.
“—No way.”
“Ah, I see… so this is how it ends.”
Jumping to his feet in shock, stark white filled Subaru’s vision as he glanced before him. Roswaal, gleefully snapping his fingers a few times, commanded flames and emitted the pungent smell of burnt flesh as piercing screams echoed throughout the “Sanctuary”.
With the charred remains of whatever he destroyed crashing before him, Subaru understood in an instant.
“Oh, a rabbit…!!”
It was one of the Great Rabbits.
One emerged slowly from the forest—as Roswaal obliterated them each with magic. Even in groups, they would only find themselves consumed by Roswaal.
In the face of numbers, there was no stronger combatant than Roswaal. As he bore witness to it, fear gripped Subaru’s heart tightly.
If he shut his eyes, memories of being torn apart by sharp teeth surged back anew.
Being ravaged—fingers, limbs, intestines, experiencing that devastation was utterly beyond articulation.
As the monstrous beasts reared their heads, Subaru felt the very essence of his soul scream out.
“But it’s still only the fifth day, I had more than half a day left!”
“Snow, huh?”
“Snow—?!”
“Considering it would be magic to interfere with the weather, the mana density would certainly differ. Moreover, with the snow affecting the circumstances, it would be exceedingly easy for all the residents of the ‘Sanctuary’ to gather at the Cathedral, a completely obvious feeding ground for any nearby beast.”
Realizing the implications behind Roswaal’s cool logic sent chills racing down Subaru’s spine.
If that logic held true, the most dangerous place in the “Sanctuary” where the Great Rabbit would strike would be—
“The Cathedral! We need to hurry to the Cathedral…!”
“But it’s too late. Having shown up here with such few numbers already means the stragglers desperate for a meal have begun to fall prey. —They might already be gone.”
“But! There’s…!”
He had taken Rem away.
Entrusted to Ryuzu, Rem was at the Cathedral where all of the “Sanctuary” residents and the evacuees from Araham Village overdoubled a hundred souls.
The thought of them all gathered together made him tremble.
“Roswaal! Right now, it’s a truce! We need to get to the Cathedral! Retrieve any survivors—get them to safety…!”
Subaru advanced to grip Roswaal’s clothing, shouting.
However, Roswaal gently restrained Subaru’s arm.
“Escape? Where would you even go? There’s a barrier in place. The residents of the ‘Sanctuary’ can’t escape.”
“That’s…!”
“Time’s run out for you, Subaru-kun. Until the ‘Trial’ is overcome, the residents can’t leave the ‘Sanctuary’. This means, you won’t be able to have your wishes come true.”
Cast aside, Subaru sank down into the snow.
Surrounded by the replicas of Ryuzu Meier that had converged around him, preparing for instructions, it came across as comical.
But then Subaru realized, even more slowly.
Roswaal, who had just a moment ago incinerated any sight of nearby monsters, was now completely out of magic.
“Roswaal! If you stop using your magic… you can’t be out of mana—?”
“Nope, that’s not it! My mana is somewhat infinite, you see? It won’t run out so easily. … It’s the reason to live that has dwindled.”
Gradually, the white, fluffy creatures began to emerge from the woods.
With snow-white fur and tiny footprints left upon the white snow, they slowly approached.
“If you mean to redo things, it would be better to have an actual conversation first! You may think it might be fine going forward to the next one, but…”
“You seem to misunderstand something.”
“Huh?!”
“I won’t be able to ‘redo’ myself even if you have. The ‘me’ waiting in your redo is not the current me. I am finished here. —And yet, it’s totally okay.”
Roswaal’s words put Subaru in shock.
To say he was excluded from the redo meant that he asserted that he was aware of Subaru’s potential for “Return by Death,” and dying here would mean the end of this very consciousness of Roswaal.
He accepted that fact but still commanded Subaru to redo things. He clearly understood that the ‘current Roswaal’ wouldn’t exist in the timeline to follow.
That manner of thought was something far too—
“That’s not the way anyone thinks like a human…”
Unlike Subaru, whose consciousness would continue, Roswaal’s would cease with his death.
To accept that ending, it was extraordinary to do so with such nonchalance.
“There will come a time when you’ll truly catch up to me, Subaru-kun.”
“Ros—!”
“Now listen, Subaru-kun. —This is important. The one thing that genuinely matters to you, it’s just that single thing. Strip away everything else. Release every possession and focus only on protecting that one precious thing.”
“—”
“If you do that—”
Roswaal raised a finger as if reciting a lesson.
And just then, a Great Rabbit that had gotten dangerously close to Roswaal bit down on his wrist. Blood splattered as Roswaal’s right arm was bitterly severed at the elbow. Multiple sets of jaws sank into his shoulders and body, gnashing flesh with dull noises.
“Roswaal!!!!”
“—You too, will become like me.”
The jester’s smile was swallowed whole by the gaping mouth of the rabbit.
The horde of white rabbits enveloped Roswaal completely, swarming him with an overwhelming number. On his back, the helpless Roswaal was devoured. Devoured. Devoured.
Blood splattered, flesh danced, and the white snow turned crimson. Even the pale snow staining crimson was lapped up and consumed by the voracious rabbits.
Subaru simply stood in silence, witnessing Roswaal lose his identity.
He watched as the very existence of Roswaal was erased from the world, being chewed up and swallowed whole.
—What a sight to behold.
