Chapter 226

The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide

Chapter 219: Too Bad

As Kamael and the others slept, a further silence descended upon the already quiet house in the deep of night.

The moon was covered by thick clouds, and as the light began to wane, an ominous feeling started to linger. That was when the door to the room where Kamael and Sonia rested slowly creaked open.

Without making a sound, the intruder walked into the room, heading towards the bed where Kamael and Sonia lay asleep. They reached out a hand towards Sonia’s mouth, checking for her breath.

Confirming that Kamael and the others were indeed asleep, the intruder pulled out a rope from their waist and reached out once more to bind Sonia.

However…

“Attacking a lady in her sleep? What a truly audacious individual you are.”

“What?!”

The moment the intruder tried to touch Sonia, she vanished into thin air like mist, and as the voice called out, she turned to see Sonia standing at the door, arms crossed.

“Ha ha. Well, it can’t be helped. That’s just this person’s job, you know?”

Then, a voice came from the only window in the room. Looking over, she saw Kamael leaning against the window frame, smiling brightly.

“What in the world…?”

“Oh my. To speak without changing your voice? You’re failing as an assassin! But well, given that you’ve stooped to such petty kidnapping, it makes sense that you’d panic in unexpected situations. Right… Helen?”

“Ugh…”

The moment Kamael uttered the intruder’s name, as if on cue, the clouds that had hidden the moon parted, and moonlight flooded in. There was Helen, the one who had guided Kamael and the others to the room and had prepared dinner.

“You seem much more spirited than when I saw you this evening. Well, that must have been an act, huh? I suppose as a professional assassin, you’re capable of such mimicry with no problem.”

Helen, momentarily bewildered by the unexpected turn of events, hesitated before quickly drawing a dagger and glaring fiercely at Kamael.

“Why are you awake? I was sure I drugged you.”

“Oh, you mean the sleeping drug in the soup? Too bad. For certain reasons, no poison or drug affects me. It’s quite handy, but it makes it tough when I catch a cold, especially since medications don’t work on me. Plus, lately, I’ve been having stomach pains and wishing for some antacids, but I can’t use those either.”

“Wha—? So you’ve known I was an assassin this whole time?”

“Hmm? From the very beginning?”

“From the beginning…?”

“Yep. You tried really hard to act normal, but too bad. The way you walk, your body’s posture, and your ability to silence your footsteps—when you first appeared before us at Tarton’s request, I immediately noticed you were an assassin.”

“No way…”

“Oh, but don’t worry—normal people wouldn’t pick up on it, so you must be a skilled assassin. You can take pride in that. But, once again—too bad. This time, you picked the wrong opponent. Did I not mention? For certain reasons, I’m also resistant to poisons. You see, I’m in the same line of work as you.”

“No way…”

The moment Helen heard that Kamael was in the same business, she realized he was an assassin too. But along with that revelation came a chill down her spine at Kamael’s impressive ability to keep his true identity hidden.

“Well, here’s the deal. I figured you’d come to this room tonight to catch us, so I used magic to create a decoy and had it lying in wait.”

The figure that had been lying on the bed was a decoy created by Sonia using dark magic.

While it wasn’t as mobile as Lewis was, it was still easy to replicate the sound of breathing.

“I see. But it’s too bad for you. This room is equipped because you’re here. But what about your accomplices in the other room?”

“Hmm. Are you saying you have Rafiy and the others as hostages?”

“That’s good to hear, thanks for being quick about it. If you don’t want your friends to die, you’d better surrender now…”

“Fufu.”

“What’s so funny?”

Despite her identity being exposed, Helen remained calm, apparently trusting that her comrades would capture Kamael and the others.

However, it was Sonia, who had been quietly listening until now, that laughed derisively at her words, covering her mouth with her hand while smirking without a hint of worry for her companions.

“Using Rafiy and the others as hostages? What a funny joke. You lot are nowhere near capable of that.”

“It’s no joke. We put a very potent sleeping drug in the soup you guys drank. Once you fall asleep, you won’t wake up for three days.”

“Really? But that’s assuming we have no countermeasures in place, right? We, after all, have magical tools embedded with strong state abnormality-nullifying magic on hand for occasions like this. Proof of that? I’m active and wide awake right now, so your companions must have already been captured.”

“Huh?”

“Her words are true. I can nullify poisons that enter my body, but I can’t deal with others’ poison. I’m not good at pharmacology. So, the reason why she isn’t affected by the drug is that she possesses a magical tool that nullifies such poisons.”

The reason Sonia didn’t succumb to the sleeping potion was due to the effects of the earrings imbued with state abnormality-nullifying magic that Lewis had given her before their journey. And of course, the same was true for Fiera and the others, who also possessed such earrings—they were not affected by the sleeping drug.

Thus, right now, they were likely dealing with Helen in the same manner, and it would be the infiltrating assassins who should be worried.

“Ugh… In that case…”

Helen, with a frustrated expression, took out a whistle from her bosom and placed it to her lips before blowing hard. The high-pitched sound echoed outside the house.

“Now my comrades outside will notice the unusual activity and gather here. Once everyone’s here, capturing you lot will be a piece of cake…”

“Ahaha!”

It appeared that Helen blew the whistle to call for her comrades in order to capture Kamael and the others, but Kamael, hearing this, laughed instead.

“Eight of them.”

“Huh?”

“Those comrades of yours refer to the eight assassins disguised as women from the village, right?”

“W-How do you know that?!”

“I told you from the start, didn’t I? I noticed from the very beginning. Did you think I figured it out only when I arrived at this house? Nope, nope. When I said ‘from the start,’ I meant when I came to this village. Sure, they all pretended to blend in as villagers and act downcast, but they couldn’t pull one over on me. I’m confident in my ability to discern who is the enemy and who is targeting us. Naturally, I was aware of the eight assassins aiming for us when we arrived in this village.”

“No way…”

“Plus, it seems you tried to disguise the situation as a bandit attack by leaving shallow sword wounds here and there, but you really dropped the ball on that one. For a bandit group, those cuts were way too shallow, not to mention, they were too smooth. Normally, a bandit wouldn’t be carrying new swords, they’d be using poorly maintained ones with chipped blades—that’s suspicious, isn’t it?”

Given that, there are only two possibilities. One, someone provided weapons to the bandits and orchestrated to kidnap the men behind the scenes. Two, someone disguised as bandits vandalized the buildings for another purpose and handed over the men somewhere.

Once you understand this much, it’s quite simple. Just apply the village’s circumstances, and the answer will naturally appear.

“Is that so? So you really knew everything, didn’t you?”

“I’ve been saying that, haven’t I? Besides, there’s no way anyone could con the masterpiece of that house—me! Hehe. From the get-go, you lot were merely dancing to my tune. I hope you’ve had a good dream?”

“The greatest masterpiece of that house… no way. Damn it! But my comrades are coming here soon! Then it will all be over for you!!”

“How unfortunate, truly unfortunate. Sadly, your comrades will not be coming to this place. By now, they should be captured by the spirits summoned by my allies. Remember Visi, the elf? She’s quite skilled at handling spirits, you know.”

Kamael had foreseen the assassins’ attack and beforehand informed Shuvina about the assassins lurking in the village, instructing her to have Dōna bind them at sunset.

Consequently, right now, in the center of the village, her comrades were collected in a bound state, unable to move, all under Dōna’s watchful eye.

“Now then. Let’s hear your goals and who is giving orders for this incident. I may not be good at pharmacology, but I excel at making people spill their secrets. Oh, just so you know, there’s no point in trying to commit suicide with poison. Our sister is a bit special—she can bring people back to life. You could try it, but the only one who’ll suffer is you, so I wouldn’t recommend it. Now, let’s talk.”

For a while thereafter, the room resonated with words of pain and wishes for death. When the voices eventually fell silent, the sun began to rise, and the sky slowly brightened.

“Thank you very much for this time.”

As the sun climbed into the sky, casting its light upon the earth.

Kamael and the others stood in front of Tarton’s house, bowing deeply to Tarton and the other villagers who continually expressed their gratitude.

“Don’t mention it. Tarton, you were targeted by those assassins, and your family must have been taken hostage, right? So it can’t be helped. Besides, because you diverted your attention to that assassin, we found out who the culprit was.”

“Thank you, but what I did is unforgivable. Even if my family was taken hostage, I sacrificed many unrelated adventurers. Surely, God will not forgive someone like me.”

After everything was over and Tarton explained in detail, it turned out that the assassins had come to this village many months ago, and all the men had been taken away then.

Additionally, Tarton’s actual daughter had also been taken hostage by those assassins, and he had been threatened to cooperate or she would be killed.

As a result, they invited adventurers who came to inquire about the situation into their homes as instructed, and after putting them to sleep with drugs, they cooperated in the assassins’ villainy of taking them somewhere.

“Rest assured. God loves us equally. Surely, your involvement in wrongdoing is a pardonable act if your family’s lives were at stake. Depending on your future actions, you may yet be forgiven by God. So now, instead of grieving and lamenting, strive to regain the good you’ve lost by doing noble deeds.”

“Ah, thank you, Sister.”

Overwhelmed with guilt, Tarton stepped forward as Sephiria released a measure of her magic, bathing Tarton in warm energy. Tearfully, Tarton expressed his thanks.

By the way, Tarton’s true granddaughter had been imprisoned at a hut a little way from the village and was also rescued in the morning by Kamael and stood next to Tarton.

“Well then, we’ll be on our way. We also found out where those taken by the assassins were headed, so we’ll assist with that.”

“Really, thank you for everything.”

Kamael and the others, after being seen off by Tarton and the other villagers, moved for a while until no one was in sight, then stepped off the road and into the tall grass.

There awaited Helen, whose true name was Mashuri, along with her comrades, kneeling and waiting, behind them was a shabby cart.

“We’ve been waiting for you, Lord Reham.”

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Mashuri. Is everything ready on your end?”

“Everything’s on track. As instructed, I’ve prepared a cart we usually use for transport.”

“I see. Well then, can you take us to Clan Kingdom where your lord is, as planned?”

“Understood.”

Helen, aka Mashuri, began directing her comrades in preparation, seemingly as if she had been following Kamael for years. Kamael and the others boarded the cart beside them.

“Huh? What’s going on?”

“Hmm? What’s the matter?”

“The assassins. Why are they so loyal to Reham?”

With only Kamael and the others now in the cart, Fiera, who had been curious about the earlier scene, asked for an explanation.

“That’s my magical ability at work. I won’t go into details, but you don’t have to worry; they won’t betray us. More importantly, we’re finally heading to Clan Kingdom. Furthermore, since we’re traveling by cart, it should be quite easy. I want to wrap this up quickly and get back home.”

As Kamael said this, he leaned back deeply into the creaky chair, the cart’s worn wood creaking ominously as if it might break apart at any moment.

As a result of Kamael torturing Mashuri, they found out that she and her companions were members of an assassination organization serving the Clan Kingdom, with orders to raid a small village in the Empire and abduct the village men and adventurers who came to visit.

Thus, Kamael and the others planned to have Mashuri, the culprit behind the kidnapping, betray them as initially planned. Then, they would disguise themselves as victims of the abduction and infiltrate the Clan Kingdom.

“Shall we head out to the Clan Kingdom, then?”

At Kamael’s signal, the cart began to move slowly towards their destination.

Thus, Kamael and the others set out toward the Clan Kingdom, disguised as if they were kidnapped, as instructed by Lewis.
